The Team Building, in the human resources field, constitutes a set of training activities, variously defined as playful, experiential or well-being, whose purpose is the formation of a group of people.
In the case of Paola, the protagonist also of this last episode of the “Materiali Dispersi” trilogy, is a weekend at the spa, kindly offered by the company to the employees. The present however hides a surprise: gradually the company will switch to multi-level, something very similar to the dismissal.
The transition to multi-level will be the culmination of the weekend and will be initiated by an exceptional testimonial: the Red Prophet, a true reference for social media in the motivational field, stuff from hundreds of thousands of likes to post.
Among sulphurous puffs of suggestive night-time baths, rich buffets and fragrant spa treatments, the protagonists spend moments of reflection and confidences, confirming what the team building theorists say: the group can be more than the sum of its individual parts.

L’umanità rimane all’esterno, estranea.

La Viaggiatrice Incantata – Materiali Dispersi (The Enchanted Traveller – Dispersed Materials) was published in June 2015. It is the fragment of the diary, a sliver of the life of a thirty-year old, Paola, forced by a mysterious job to double commuting, in Italy, between Rimini and Bologna, and in the skies of the world.

The diary gives a picture of the protagonist’s fortunes from a muggy Assumption day in Japan to a surreal Christmas Eve in Rimini. A story made of loneliness and independence, descriptions of corners of the world, bottles of wine opened at the foot of an Ikea sofa and confidences to a friend who is also her lover. And there is an ex who she can’t seem to get out of her head, a superficial and hyperactive friend and, above all, a family with many shadows in its past.

Everything runs through Paola’s life lighthly. Detachment and irony leave the young woman on the fringes of the nightlife of Romagna, with its discos and happy hours. Worries crowd into the protagonist’s mind and vanish with shocking intensity alternating with disenchantment. Bizarre work meetings and instant dismissals, electromagnetic pollution, immigration, everything passes before the eyes of a puzzled foreigner. Everything is skimmed over, barely touched upon and already forgotten.

The unsettled relationship with religion accompanies the moderately Christian Paola over the world throughout the whole fragment of the diary. Religion seems to be part of the woman’s mysterious job, enliven international meetings, influence film choices, obsess the protagonist in her dialogues out of time with an old friend of her mother.

The veil shrouding Paola’s solitary life is suddenly lifted when she reads a diary that resembles her own childhood. On a sudden impulse, the protagonist breaks the monotony of her life and sets out to discover her past. The adrenaline brought on by the novelty gradually fades until it disappears in the daily traffic jams on the bypass.

So Paola the commuter listens to the voice of the world on Isoradio, the channel for traffic updates, and watches life go by through the shiny windscreen of her new car, has lunch on a swing and manages to sleep with the help of valerian. Humanity is left outside, like a stranger.

The book came first in the 2016 edition of the literary prize “Mondoscrittura Città di Ciampino”.

A Massimo quegli ottantotto fogli in formato A4 piacciono.

For the length and complexity of the plot, Nella Prospettiva dei Tempi is my true first novel. The book, published in 2010, follows the sentimental and literary fortunes of a nameless narrator and his best friend, Massimo. Their friendship starts at school when they are fifteen years old, it is abruptly interrupted when they both lose their parents, it is resumed and strengthens during their university years in Bologna.

Massimo is restless, struggling to realise some of his rather evanescent entrepreneurial projects. His friend helps him by funding the opening of a pizzeria inside an old disused industrial warehouse with the savings inherited from his parents’ death. With careless foolhardiness, the two become partners. The investment changes their lives and the business slowly begins to take off.

Meanwhile the nameless narrator finishes his studies and starts to write, with no particular purpose. He is alone with a daughter to bring up, he can’t find the right woman nor a satisfying job, but if he writes, it is only because he really enjoys it.

He finishes his novel Clementina and, after some hesitation, he submits it to his intimates. Massimo likes those eighty-eight A4 size sheets. The writer feels lost, he doesn’t know how to proceed and Massimo understands it is now his turn to help his friend. Through enthusiasms and naiveties, the search for a publisher starts.

After a few not exactly exciting experiences, the two decide to set up their own publishing house and self-publish Clementina. A leap into the unknown? Maybe, if it weren’t for a providential encounter.

Over the years, before and after its publication, Nella Prospettiva dei Tempi has won six awards and mentions in national literary prizes for both published and unpublished fiction.

Always not far from home, in Rimini, I found Panozzo, a publishing house that, among cooking recipes from Romagna and unpublished texts by Garcia Lorca and Marina Cvetaeva, did not disdain promoting youngsters. We immediately reached an understanding, Mr Panozzo and I: he would not charge me any costs and I would bring him some of my readers with rollers in their hair as a dowry. We again published 5,000 copies. I contented myself with his amateur distribution (he used to go round bookshops in central Italy on his bicycle, after getting there from Rimini by train), without looking for fortune elsewhere. Also this time, many copies were distributed to hairdressers’ salons.

The book tells the story of a thirty year old man on the threshold of marriage who, taken by nostalgia, flies back through time and space, memories and fantasies, unfulfilled dreams and unexpressed wishes.

So he first brings back a dear and long-forgotten friend from the past, then the two of them set off in search of some of the women the protagonist had loved over the years. In fact, the journey soon becomes the excuse to spend some time with his old friend and go back to the places they both loved, from the corridors of their old school to the university bar.

The present tense in the dialogues alternates with the past, which is broken down and presented to the reader in the form of a diary. To link up the two styles and make the text almost a theatrical comedy, a narrating voice describes with short asides what the reader cannot see of the scene.

In the year of its publication, Ladro di Farfalle came second in the Garcia Lorca international prize for literature. My preferred creation.

Clementina

The title of my first book is Clementina. It is actually a small book of 80 pages with two stories, Galaverna (Rime) and Clementina. I self-published it in 1998, to escape the exorbitant demands of grasping publishers. I discovered that there was a passionate bookseller in Senigallia, just a few kilometres from my home, who had founded a small and honest publishing house which distributed only in the Marche region and published only the books he liked at favourable terms (basically, the printer was a friend of his). We came to an agreement and that’s when it all kicked off.

In those same years, to supplement my income, I was teaching chemistry in a school for hairdressers set up by the owner of a management company. I mentioned to him about the book and he liked it very much. To cut a long story short, he bought 5,000 copies and distributed them within a network of hairdressers throughout Italy as Christmas gadgets (instead of the same old hairbrushes, he told me).

I spent many Saturday afternoons of 1998 meeting women with rollers in their hair in salons with tropical temperatures and I really enjoyed playing the writer in such a feminine environment… The feedback was encouraging and the book met with very positive response, beyond mine and my manager’s most optimistic expectations.

Clementina tells of a chance meeting at a party and sudden and inexplicable overwhelming passion. The short story develops into an obsessive search and explodes into a surprise ending.
